Behind His Name

I have a whole slew of posts scheduled, but today I wanted to write about why we chose Dominick's name. One of my new co-workers is pregnant with twins. We were talking about names and how hard it is to pick a name.

For Ryan and I it was so easy picking a girls name, of course we didn't have a girl and I had a feeling we were having a boy so it was much harder picking that name. We knew we wanted the middle name to be Thomas or Liam. My dad's first name is Thomas and his middle name is William so we took the last half of William to get Liam.

For his first name we couldn't decide. I like really unique, really masculine names. We wanted a name that we didn't know anyone personally with this name. We wanted one that was still strong, but within reason for Ryan. My top pick was Xavier and Ryan's top pick was Hudson. While I liked Hudson, we know someone who has a baby named Judson and it was just too close. Not to mention what would his nickname be? So back to the drawing board we went.

A name I threw out in the beginning when we were making our list was Dominick. It was strong (but not too strong), unique (we didn't know anyone named that) and I loved the meaning. Initially Ryan vetoed it, but then I said what about Dominick Thomas? At that point he said yes, he liked it.

Dominick means Belonging To God and Thomas means Twin.

I couldn't imagine him being anything other than Dominick. I think it fits him so well. But we do not always call him Dominick. Some of his nicknames include Dom, Buddha and Baby Man. Sometimes I'll call him Domani, but Ryan hates that.

We almost changed his name at the very last minute. A lot of people like to call him Dominique and it drives us NUTS! In our opinion it is very obvious his name is DomiNICK, but since we liked it so much we decided not to change it.

I love how you picked out his name, and the meaning of Dominick (my grandfather was "Dominic," nicknamed "Don). Also, I would be frustrated if people pronounced his name "Dominique, too!"
