Newborn-3 Month Essentials

Now that Dominick is past the new baby stage I thought I would write a post about things that we used a lot with him and things that we didn't find quite as useful. Maybe these will be the same when and if we have any more littles.

1. Fisher Price Cradle N Swing: My Little Lamb
We used this swing SO much. I think we would go through batteries every 3-4 weeks for the first three months. Dominick LOVED his swing and it would also give us time to be hands free and make/eat dinner and do things around the house. He would sit in it just to hang out or nap.

2. Boppy

I never really used the boppy to help with breastfeeding, but I did use it to prop Dominick in. He loved being able to be a little more elevated so he could see. We still use this and I am so glad that we ended up putting it on our registry

3. Baby Einstein Neptune Ocean Adventure Gym
Dominick LOVED this. I started him on the mat on his back at a few weeks old and on his belly around a month. He liked that there was so much to look at and he especially loved the mirror.

4. Medela Pump In Style

Since I knew I was going to be heading back to work, I started pumping early on. I wanted around a months supply when I went back to work. It was my least favorite thing to do, but I knew I had to if I wanted to keep my supply up and continue breastfeeding as a working mom. I really couldn't imagine having a manual or even a single pump.

I didn't really do much research on strollers. My parents said that my brother and sister in law had this stroller and it was easy to push. I liked that it came apart and would be easy for traveling. They bought it for us and I have no regrets. It was really easy to travel with and pushes really good. Dominick was WAY too small for it, but hated being in his carseat so he's been in this since around 3 weeks old.

6. Chicco Keyfit 30

I really loved this carseat. It was easy to install and even easier to use. It already had the infant inserts that could easily be removed. We bought it in this color as well since it was pretty gender neutral. Two things I didn't like about this carseat was that Dominick would get VERY hot in it, but remember we live in the desert and temps get to be 110+ and that when he got heavier it became TOO heavy!

We use the Born Free Eco Deco bottles. Dominick didn't take a bottle until he was around 5 or 6 weeks old. He would only have 1 every couple of weeks until I went back to work at 10 weeks. When I did go back to work he didn't have any problem taking them. I love that they have a venting system to reduce gas, etc and they're super easy to clean. These are a great basic bottle in our opinion. Born Free also has glass bottles.

8. Lillebaby Nordic Carrier

I wasn't really sure on the whole babywearing concept before having Dominick so I didn't want to spend a lot of money on one. I read lots of reviews and I found this one. It was reasonably priced and it seemed to have everything I wanted. It also said I would be able to put my newborn in it without having to buy any other pieces. SCORE! So I bought it. Unfortunately, it was too wide for Dominick when he was a brand new, but it worked great at around 1 month plus. We still use this occassionally, but he doesn't really care for it becuase he likes to be able to look around. It's really not good for babies to be carried forward facing (regardless of the carrier) so I choose to not use it much anymore. This was the biggest lifesaver for me when I wanted to get things done while he was sleeping or when we were out and about.

We put Dominick in the bassinet part right away. At first he hated it (we soon realized he hated the canopy thing being up), but quickly learned to like it. He grew out of the bassinet part around 2 months and then he slept with us until recently when we started using just the pack 'n play part. I love that he is able to be in our room and close. We didn't really use the changer portion, but it was nice when he was itty bitty.

Ever since Dominick was a newborn he's LOVED his bathtime. The sling worked great and then at about 2 months when his head was a little more stable we got rid of the sling and just used the tub. Both were great for when he was a baby. He would hang one of his feet out of the side when he would layin the sling.

Some other things we use were pampers diapers, huggies natural care wipes, mam and avent pacifiers (both of he will take with no problem), aveeno baby wash and lotion, desitin, diaper genie and bottle drying rack (for breastfeeding parts and for bottles).

Some things that we didn't use or that Dominick just didn't care for were:

1. Snuza
After too many false alarms we just stopped using it. I thought this would be great and give me a little peace of mind, but it just drove me nuts. I was constantly on edge that it was going to go off, etc. We really could have done without this.
2. Avent Bottle Warmer
I had to have this and I can honestly say I've used it less than 5 times. To be fair, Dominick never really has a bottle if he's with me AND it's just easier to warm some water and put the bottle/bag in it.

3. Bouncer Seat

We didn't have this exact one, but I can't find the one that we had. Dominick used it for a very short period of time, but we could have definitely done without this.

We didn't even buy a sound machine, night light or anything like that. We've never been quiet when Dominick is sleeping, aware, but we still make noise, talk at a normal tone, etc. We didn't want him to become reliant on these things. We also didn't buy a wipe warmer (Mom, if you're reading this you're probably cringing) because once again I didn't want him to be used to having a nice warm wipe at home and then when we were out and about him hating having his pants changed due to a cold wipe.

So there you have it, my list of new baby essentials! I think a lot of it was trial and error and personal preference. These worked for us and for Dominick, but may not work for anyone else or even our next baby.

The Lucky Ones

Last night Ryan and I were laying in bed talking. We used to do this all the time, but it seems like as soon as our heads hit the pillows these days we are quickly off to dreamland. I miss these times because we would have some of the best conversations.

Yesterday was not a bad day per say just not a great day. Dominick slept well, I was 10 minutes early for work (which if you know me it's a miracle) and work went by relatively quickly, those are all GREAT things. It was just one of those days where I missed my family, I missed my friends, I miss the snow that comes with the cold weather, I was missing familiar things and to top it off I didn't have 3 of the ingredients I needed for dinner (however it turned out to be pretty decent). I sent Ryan a text during the day telling him to ask the AF to move us someplace really stinking cool and to give him orders that day. While in all reality we will be in CA for at least another year if we're lucky...probably 2+ if we're being realistic. On one hand we can't wait to move; we've been ready to leave since we got here, but our friends, the opportunities and the sites have made this place bearable. It was just one of those days.

Anyways, last night we were laying in bed. Dominick was sleeping in his pack n play next to us. We were both on our phones setting alarms and checking e-mails one last time. I put mine down and I said, "ry, I don't want Dominick to grow up (For a side note: this has been a battle of mine since he was born, in fact in my SUPER hormonal days after having him I was crying one morning after I got out of the shower. Ryan came in to check on me and asked me what was wrong. I said I don't want him to get any older, I want him to stay small forever. Dominick was only a week old). Right now, we go on adventures together, I'm his #1 person, I don't annoy him I make him laugh, he wants me around...like always. When he gets biggers he's not going to want me on his adventures and I will annoy him and he most definitely won't want me around all the time and that makes me sad." Ryan said, "But you can't be sad about that, just enjoy him right now and the stages that he goes through. He's happy, he's loved, he's HEALTHY and what could be more important than that? You'll always be important to him and even though you won't be going on those adventures TOGETHER, he'll still let you be apart of them." We laid there a little while longer, me pondering that and trying not to be sad and I think Ryan went back to doing things on his phone. I eventually said, "Ry, do you ever think about how lucky we are? How truly blessed our life is?" He replied with a simple and short, "yea, all the time." It made me smile because he rarely says things like this. He's so reserved with his feelings and emotions that he would never just tell me these things or would jokingly say something to lighten the conversation, but this time he didn't. He was serious and I loved that.

Regardless of the small things, we are blessed. Our life is far from perfect and we do have bad days, but our good days outweigh our bad. We are the lucky ones.

Pinterest Recipes

I'd be lying if I didn't say that the majority of our meals come from Pinterest. I think Ryan and I would go crazy if it wasn't for Pinterest. Seriously! Saturday/Sunday I get online go through recipes (some old, some new) and make our weekly menu. There are some staple recipes from my momma that I add in, but most of them come from Pinterest. I must admit, we have had some major failures and some that we just can't get enough of. So I thought I would share with you some of our more recent favorites. My username is alboutwell if you'd like to follow my "Yummy Goodness" board (or any of them for that matter)
Honey Lime Shrimp

We had this on Monday night and it was so good. We served it with rice and Ryan said that he really thought he could eat all 2lbs of shrimp. He didn't.

Chicken Alfredo Roll Ups

We had these on Tuesday night and seriously they were soooo good. I thought it was going to be a lot of work to make, but they really weren't. Ryan said that he really liked them and that he would want them again. We both thought they tasted like an alfredo breadstick. Yum!

Easy Cheese Danish

I made these twice while my parents were here. They're so good and SO easy to make.

Cinnamon Honey Bananas

You can't get much easier than this. We are always looking for healthier options for dessert and this is one of them.

Chicken Tortilla Bake

We had this a few weeks ago, but it was just as delicious as a leftover for lunch the next day. It tasted like an enchilada casserole.

Taco Pasta

We also had this a few weeks ago and it was so yummy. It was great for leftovers as well.

Crockpot Beef Stroganoff

I made this a few weeks ago also and it was so creamy and delicious. Ryan thought it tasted so good. I must also say that crockpot meals are a staple in our house since I leave for work around 5:30 AM in the mornings and get home around 4. It makes for an easy dinner.

Crockpot Loaded Baked Potato Soup

I made this the week before my parents came. It made so much that we gave some to friends. If you like baked potatoes then we highly recommend this recipe

Breakfast Grilled Cheese

This was divine. It was so delicious! Ryan wasn't a HUGE fan, but I totally was.

Better Than Take Out Chicken Fried Rice

We make this as a meal of its own, but when my parents were here we made this and paired it with the Mongolian Beef recipe (also found on pinterest) and it was so good. It really is such a yummy recipe and we always have  TONS left over.

Las Vegas

Back in November when my parents decided they were going to come out, we started looking for a good deal on airline tickets. Since it was around the holidays it was nearly impossible, but the best "deal" we both found was out of Las Vegas. We have lots of airports that are "close" to us and this is one of them that we wouldn't mind picking our visitors up from. They booked the flights and we began talking about an overnight trip to Vegas the night before they flew home.

So Ryan is in the end stages of preparing for an inspection at work so he had to work on the 4th and got out kind of late. We left Edwards around 2-2:30 and arrived around 5 into Vegas. We quickly checked in, dropped our stuff off at the hotel and ventured out to see some of the city.

We had dinner at Cabo Wabo and it was so good. I am pretty sure I had the best fajitas of my life.
We walked around the Belagio and watched the water fountain show and saw the chocolate fountains.

We checked out some of the other hotels.
We had an amazing, easy going baby with us.
he found his tongue this day
We enjoyed each others companies and I think we all enjoyed our last night together for a while.

The next day we got up and had a quick breakfast and went to New York New York and MGM. My mom and I put in $2 each in the penny slots, she won $14 and some cents and I won $2.18 so we both ended up leaving ahead (even though I barely made it). After that we went back to the hotel to pack up and I had to feed Dominick before we headed to the airport. We dropped them off so they could board their flight and we were all pretty bummed. We always have such a good time with them and this was no exception. We got to do so many fun things and enjoyed our time with them so much so it was pretty sucky that our time together was coming to an end.

After we dropped them off Ryan and I went to upgrade our phones so we did that first (we upgraded to iphone 5s). Afterwards, Ryan let me pick where we went to have lunch/dinner before heading out. He knew I was feeling a little down after seeing my parents off so we went to Serendipity 3 where we had an amazing lunch (I got the ABC burger and he got the BBQ and blue burger. We both liked them. We also shared a strawberry frozen hot chocolate and it was so delish! It was a fun afternoon, but our trip back took ~3 hours and felt closer to 10.

The house felt pretty empty and very lonely when we arrived. Sunday we started getting back into our routine and "normal".

52 Project: 1/52

One of the things I want to do more of this year is to document our life. We get so caught up in living in the moment and enjoying the things we're doing that we often forget to take any pictures. (For a sidenote: I don't think this quality is entirely horrible, but I would like more pictures) Theres a few years where I try to find pictures of something that we did and I have nothing for those moments and I just wish I did. Now that we have Dominick I take way more pictures, but I want to do even better. So I downloaded an iphone app and have decided to do the 365 challenge, which so far hasn't been hard because I can just whip out my phone, take a photo and upload it to the app. See..easy, peasy!

When Kristy posted about the 52 project, I thought this should be way easy. I'm constantly trying to document Dominick and he's my favorite "subject" to photograph anyways. So I am going to be do this "challenge" as well. Unlike the 365, this one is a photo a week of your child. I feel like Dominick is changing, learning and doing new things every time I walk back in the room so I'm so excited to see his physical changes each week (and I'm still doing the monthly updates too).
