San Diego Trip

I mentioned that we spent Labor Day weekend in San Diego in a couple other posts. Ryan and I really wanted to have a fun weekend for Dominick before his birthday (which fell on a Tuesday) and didn't want to spend it in the desert. Since San Diego is very kid friendly and not too far away we decided it would be an easy place to go, especially since we were going to be going in that direction anyways since my parents, Dominick and I flew into LAX.
We spent nine hours on an airplane thanks to two extra pit stops along the way and finally arrived in Los Angeles around 12:30. Ryan was waiting for us at the USO so he met us and we filled the truck with 5 suitcases, bags, a stroller and the pack n play Ryan had put in there for Dominick. What should have only been a 1.5-2 hour drive ended up being closer to 4-4.5 hours. To say it was a long day is a complete understatement.
When we arrived in SD we immediately went to Coronado and ate at Five Guys and it was everything and more. We did a little bit of shopping, picked up our tickets for the zoo and walked around before heading to our hotel (we actually stayed at Pt Loma). It was only around 9, but we were tired from a long day and all went to bed pretty early.
Sunday morning we were all up kind of early and got around pretty quick. We went and had a big breakfast and made it to the San Diego zoo by 9:30. When we got there it was pretty empty which was the complete opposite from when we were there in July. We headed to the Pandas first, mostly because the last time we were there the wait was over 3 hours and I had to see them. I’m so glad we did because they were a close first of my favorite animal of the day. Dominick even saw them and was pretty enamored with them. The San Diego zoo is one of the best that we’ve been to; it’s really busy, but they have tons of animals and they’re enclosures aren’t teeny tiny so I think they have a good quality of life. Around noon we got to see an elephant (Devi) get a pedicure and that was so cool. Elephants are my favorite animal so I was really excited to get to see this. Dominick might have even left with his own Devi…a much smaller Devi. We didn’t even get to see the entire zoo, but we were getting hungry and it was getting more crowded and hot as the day went on.
After we left the zoo we headed to this small restaurant near Pt Loma and had “linner”. We ordered gyros and sandwiches and they did NOT disappoint. It was SO good and we left with full bellies. After dinner it was too early to go back to the hotel so we went to a NEX and did some shopping and we had to pick some things up from the commissary. We headed back to the hotel and walked around base before calling it a night. Dominick loves being outside and he had done a lot of sitting the past two days so he was happy to stretch his little legs.
Monday we got up, got around, packed up the truck and had breakfast. Our final destination before hitting the road back to Edwards was La Jolla Cove. We heard that we would be able to see seals and it was a really pretty area, it also happens to be on our bucket list of places to go/see before we leave California. It was super foggy and pretty cloudy, but the weather was perfect to walk around. We took some pictures and enjoyed the beautiful scenery and called it a day. Traffic wasn’t bad at all since we avoided the LA area/traffic (the 5 and 405) so we made pretty good time coming home. Since we had been gone for 10 days and then spent the weekend away our fridge was pretty bare so we stopped to have dinner at a teeny tiny Mexican restaurant that my parents happened to find a year ago.

It was the perfect mini vacation and we can’t wait to go back in November for some more adventures. I don’t even think we would mind living or staying in California if SD was our home. Thankfully, it’s only a hop, skip and a jump away so we can visit often.
